In veterinary education, applying theory-based learning to an authentic clinical environment can be challenging – which is why, at Burtons Academy, we are combining the two.
Findings from our large-scale survey that included veterinary surgeons, registered veterinary nurses and students highlighted that 70% of those in practice are not confident with ventilation, despite 27% of those surveyed having a ventilator and not using it.
This full-day course will include capnography, dead space, breathing systems and how to ventilate a patient under anaesthesia. Followed by an afternoon of small group practical sessions, working hands-on with a ventilator and a carbon dioxide-expiring canine model, enabling the real-life simulation of a patient under anaesthesia.
The course is being held on Friday 9th June at The Scotsman Hotel, and will run from 9 am until 5 pm, allowing an hour for lunch and a 15-minute morning break:
9.00am | Capnography with Courtney Scales Capnography has become routine in many practices and has been a great step forward in patient monitoring, but there are some fundamental pitfalls. This talk discusses the limitations of capnography, clears up some common misconceptions and presents a solution. |

Dead space with Courtney Scales Dead space is commonly heralded to be a real “no-no” in anaesthesia but how much is too much and what does it mean for your patient? This talk reveals the facts about dead space, what it is, what it means to your patient and how to compensate for it. |

10.30am | 15 minute break |
10.45am | Build a Breathing system with Keith Simpson The correct use and understanding of the function of breathing systems and anaesthetic machines benefit both the patient and practice, allowing for the safe delivery of anaesthetic gases to the patient and reducing the negative economic and environmental impact that occurs with their use. This talk will demonstrate the flow of gas in different breathing systems, how to calculate fresh gas flows and select the appropriate breathing system for individual patients. Ventilation with Keith Simpson This talk sets out to explain the core principles used during mechanical ventilation, namely central control of respiration, lung capacity, lung compliance and carbon-dioxide regulation. With these concepts fully explained, the process of setting up a ventilator for a patient will be covered and this process will include selecting volume or pressure cycling, selecting inspiratory and expiratory times, determination of hypo- or hyperventilation and responding to changes in monitored patient parameters. |
12.30pm | Hour lunch break |
13.30pm | How to use a Merlin Ventilator with Courtney Scales |
14.30pm | Practical: Hands-on Merlin Exercises with Keith & Courtney |
16.30pm | Questions with Keith & Courtney |
Speakers:
Courtney Scales DipVN, NCert(Anaesth), RVN – Clinical Educator in Anaesthesia
Dr Keith Simpson BVSc, MRCVS, MIET(Electronics) - Clinical Director
